Winterburn Lane is an old green lane running from Flasby, over to Friars Head at Winterburn in the Yorkshire Dales. The lower part of the lane as it comes into the top of Flasby is bordered by mature Ash and Sycamore trees forming an enclosed “tree tunnel.”
In this painting, we see this part of the green lane on a late summer evening. The lowering sun illuminates the field bordering the lane but casts deep shadows from the fence and trees, creating a feeling of enclosure and tranquillity.
