Milner Field was a Victorian mansion built by Titus Salt the Industrialist. The house gained something of a dark reputation and lay empty from about 1930 when it failed to sell at auction. It was finally demolished in the 1950’s but you can still see parts of the ruins in the woods. Although the north and south lodges remain and are still in use, the whole place has rather a brooding gothic feel about it.
This painting is loosely based on the gates at North Lodge. Built-up in multiple washes and glazes, it is a study of the luminous light and deep shadows of a late autumn twilight.
