Moonlight On The Top Road

Travelling between Hetton and Gargrave, just above the village of Flasby in the Yorkshire Dales you pass through a small piece of woodland. Enclosed on both sides by mature Beech, Sycamore and Ash trees, the road winds through a tree “tunnel,” emerging into the open just around the next bend. This painting shows the road here on a clear late summer night where the ethereal glow of the bright moonlight contrasts with the deep blue shadows under the trees. The scene appears to be illuminated in shades of blue on this cold and peaceful night.
